An Eternal Inheritance

My husband and I recently had a conversation about leaving our children an inheritance. It initiated with a discussion concerning finances and saving. Naturally, the first thought of an inheritance is a bankroll of cash. We automatically consider Proverbs 13:22 and think we need a storehouse so we can save up enough to put our grandchildren through college.

But, I'm not quite sure that's what God had in mind...

In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus tells us not to store up earthly treasures {money, stuff}, but to "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (v. 19-20). He then says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (v. 21).

So I considered this.

What is more important to me, as a parent and a grandparent? Saving up thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in hopes that one day I can pay for my grandchild's education? Or making sure I leave a godly inheritance of generational Christians behind me?

One will fade away just as I will and the earth will. Dare I say that with the way the world is today, we may not even have use of that money in X amount of years? What good will it do my grandchildren? I'm not sure.

One thing I'm sure of, though. Jesus died for my sins and the sins of my family members so that we could have an eternal inheritance in Him. And that is something that neither moth nor rust can destroy and a thief or a government cannot steal. That is the greater inheritance.

Am I saying that it isn't important to save? No. Not at all. I'm just cautioning against making that a priority over making certain our future generations have the spiritual inheritance they so greatly deserve.

    1. Thanks Anita. I've taken care of it...again. Why do people have to be so disrespectful of others? It's such a shame...
