This week, my Fabulous Friend is Ellen from The Eye! You'll notice that the questions are a little different this week. That's because Miss Ellen is a photographer!
How long have you been taking pictures? Since I was about 6.
What was your first camera? A Kodak Hawkeye, the old blue & white kind with the blue square flash cube. What kind of camera do you have now? Now I have a canon rebel XT digital camera that I use .... and my good ol' Minolta X-7A 35-mm film camera.
Do you prefer film or digital? I think each have their pros and cons. I don't prefer one over the other these days. If you asked me this 5 years ago, I'd have said film. I think digital has come a long way in that time.
Is photography more of a hobby for you or more of a business for you or a good combination of both? It's my passion. I work full time as a medical transcriptionist, but I work from home, so it affords me plenty of time to devote to art, be it photography, painting, drawing, writing, etc. I don't think of it as my hobby. It's a necessity, like water.
Do you have your own studio? In our 3 bedroom apartment, we have one room devoted to art... our easels and paint and other supplies are in there... it faces south, so it gets lots of nice light for painting etc...
What is it that you love about photography? Ohhhh... the ability to freeze a moment and keep it forever ....
What is your favorite subject to take photos of? Mama Nature .... flowers, bugs, sunsets, mountains, valleys, trees, etc... I'm not a portrait taker... I love my macro lens and seeing what things look like up close.
"I Could Dream"
Do you have any favorite techniques? Not really... I shoot as the spirit moves me...
Have you taken classes in photography, or are you a self-taught enthusiast? Back in high school in the early 80s, I had one semester of photography. I'm self taught more than anything and proud of that fact.
Were you ever given some really great advice that has made a difference in your photography?Hmmmmmmmm...... nothing comes to me immediately, so I'd have to say no.... I just know what I like and I hope I can capture something that strikes a chord in somebody else who is viewing it.
Do you have any advice for new photographers?
1. learn your equipment ....
2. you get what you pay for...
3. learn all the 'rules' and then throw them away....
Who is your greatest fan/encourager/supporter? My daughter, my family
What is your dream for your photography? Ultimately, I'd like to do this full time as my job ... right now it doesn't pay the bills
Show us your all-time favorite photo that you have taken and tell us a little about what it means to you: this is ONE of my all time faves:
...just because it's so beautifully green... simple and pure .... gorgeous example of Mother Nature's pristine handiwork. We, as artists, can only dream of creating something so perfect.
Here is some more of Ellen's photography for your viewing pleasure! I love the simplicity of her shots. They are beautiful and timeless, and I always look forward to seeing what's going to come into her viewfinder next!
